MOSCOW, March 29 – RIA Novosti. Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in a video message, called Ukraine, where the persecution of the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church takes place at the state level, “the territory of the greatest religious freedom” in part of Europe. “Today, a step was also taken to strengthen the spiritual independence of our state, to protect our society from Moscow’s ancient and cynical manipulations of religion. Ukraine is the territory of the greatest religious freedom in our part of Europe. It is in a video message posted on its Telegram channel. Supporters of the schismatic “Ukrainian Orthodox Church” (OCU) have previously captured the last church of the Canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) in Ivano-Frankivsk using tear gas. The UOC message said that the looters entered through the side doors, opened the center ones and pushed the parishioners off the stairs. The police did not intervene. ‘UOC said that the secretary of the Ivano-Frankivsk diocese, Archpriest Vasily Romanyuk, was hospitalized unconscious after the attack on the church by schismatics, because it was not possible to bring him back to the At the beginning of March, the leadership of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra reserve announced the termination of the indefinite lease of the Holy Dormition Kiev-Pechersk Lavra from the UOC, ordering the monks of the canonical church to leave the monastery before March 29. Ukrainian Culture Minister Oleksandr Tkachenko said monks from the canonical UOC will be able to stay in the Lavra if they are transferred to the schismatic OCU. On March 20, members of the UOC synod, headed by Metropolitan Onufry, arrived at the office of the President of Ukraine to state their position, but he refused to accept them. On March 23, the UOC synod issued an appeal to the highest hierarchs, clergy and parishioners of the church with a call to protect its right to be in the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra. The persecution of the canonical UOC in 2018 turned into a full-scale state campaign, the Ukrainian authorities, with the help of the Patriarch of Constantinople Bartholomew, created the OCU from schismatic organizations – a competitor of the UOC. Last year, the Ukrainian authorities staged the biggest wave of persecution of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in the country’s recent history. Referring to its links with Russia, local authorities in different regions of Ukraine have decided to ban the activities of the UOC, and a draft law on its effective ban in Ukraine has been submitted to the country’s parliament. State sanctions were imposed on some representatives of the UOC clergy, the SBU began to initiate criminal proceedings against the UOC clergy, to conduct searches in the homes of bishops and priests, in churches and monasteries, looking for evidence of “anti-Ukrainian activities”. The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights has released a report on freedom of religion in Ukraine which highlights discrimination against the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church.
