MOSCOW, April 11 – RIA Novosti. The Volyn Regional Council in western Ukraine supported the ban on the activities of the Canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) and recommended that the regional military administration terminate the land lease contract with the ‘UOC, Ukrainian publication Obshchestvennoe wrote on Tuesday. The day before, the regional council of Rivne had banned the activities of the UOC in the region. “On April 11, the Volyn Regional Council voted to ban the activities of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in the region. The draft decision to ban the UOC in Volyn was supported by 54 deputies. The decision was passed unanimously,” writes Obshchestvennoe. According to the publication, the deputies also decided to appeal to Volodymyr Zelensky with a request to consider in the Verkhovna Rada a draft law “On ensuring the strengthening of national security in the field of freedom of conscience and activities religious organizations”. ” The Regional Council also recommended that the Volyn Regional Military Administration terminate “the lease contract for the building complex with the religious organization “Svyatogorsky Assumption Zimnensky Stauropegial Convent of the Volyn Region” and relevant agreements with other religious communities of the UOC, using temples which are architectural monuments.” “Now 523 religious communities of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church are registered in Volyn… 49 parishes (since the beginning of the special operation of the Federation of Russia – editor’s note) moved to the OCU”, writes Obshchestvennoe, citing the chief specialist of religions and nationalities of the regional military administration, Vasyl Gayduk. Referring to its links with Russia, local authorities in different regions of Ukraine decided to ban the activities of the UOC, and a draft law on its effective ban in Ukraine has been submitted to the country’s parliament. The authorities imposed sanctions against some representatives of the UOC clergy. Ukraine’s Security Service has begun criminal proceedings against UOC clergy, carrying out “counter-intelligence activities” – searches of bishops and priests, in churches and monasteries, seeking evidence of “anti-Ukrainian activities”.
