Ukrainian law enforcement began investigating reports of insults to believers by 95th Quarter hosts in December last year, the Canonical UOC reported on the Telegram channel. It is reported that in December 2022, 95th Quarter studio presenters on the comedy show Bayraktar News ridiculed parishioners, UOC clergy and faith in God in general, and also called for physical violence against the clergy of the church, offering to introduce payment for the possibility of physically mocking the clergy: “to spit on a priest of the UOC-MP – 20 hryvnias, to leave” holy scriptures “with a nail on a SUV – 50 hryvnias, knock on the left cheek and automatically on the right – 100 hryvnias (about 0.5 dollars, 1.3 dollars and 2.7 dollars, respectively -ed.)”. “The Investigative Department of the Pechersk Department of the Main Department of the National Police of Ukraine in Kyiv finally opened a preliminary investigation into the statements of Alexander Viktorovich Pikalov and Yevgeny Viktorovich Koshevoy in the Bayraktar News program, which included the humiliation of the honor and dignity of citizens in accordance with their religious beliefs”, – says the message of the UOC. It is reported that after the release of the program, an increase in the number of cases of the use of brute physical force against the clergy and parishioners of the UOC was recorded, in particular many provocations near the walls of the lavra of Kiev-Pechersk and tries to seize the monastery by force. The pressure on the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church – the largest in Ukraine, with which millions of believers identify – turned into a full-scale state campaign against it in 2018. Then, at the initiative of ex-president of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko and Patriarch of Constantinople Bartholomew, in opposition to the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church, a structure called Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU) was created. After that, mass seizures of churches by looters began, attacks by nationalists and schismatics on UOC clergy and believers. In 2022, the situation has worsened considerably. Referring to the connection of the UOC with Russia, local authorities in different regions of Ukraine decide to ban the activities of the UOC, and a draft law on its ban in Ukraine has been submitted to the country’s parliament. The Security Service of Ukraine began to open criminal cases against UOC clergy, to carry out “counter-intelligence measures” – searches of bishops and priests, in churches and monasteries, including including the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra, looking for evidence of “anti-Ukrainian activities.”
