MOSCOW, April 12 – RIA Novosti. The attack on the Bishop of Ivano-Frankivsk and Kolomyia Nikita (Storozhuk) in the city of Chernivtsi in Ukraine was committed by a malicious malefactor, the Ukrainian Canonical Orthodox Church (UOC) said on Wednesday. On Tuesday, the UOC reported that a criminal case had been opened in the attack on the bishop. “Yaroslav Gorban, who attacked the Bishop of Ivano-Frankivsk and Kolomoisky Nikita, turned out to be a person who systematically commits offenses. According to the Open Register of Court Decisions, more than 20 different lawsuits have been opened against him, and on the day of the violence, April 10, 2023, the district court heard another,” read a message posted on the UOC website. On Monday night, the bishop was beaten at the entrance to the UOC’s St. Nicholas Church. Then a man got out of the car, beat him and the sub-deacon, the underage son of a Ukrainian soldier, the UOC reported earlier. Supporters of the schismatic “Orthodox Church of Ukraine” (OCU) previously captured the last church of the canonical UOC in Ivano-Frankivsk using tear gas. The UOC message says the looters entered through the side doors, opened the center ones and pushed parishioners off the stairs. The police did not intervene. The UOC said that the secretary of the Ivano-Frankivsk diocese, Archpriest Vasily Romanyuk, was hospitalized unconscious after the attack on the church by schismatics, because it was not possible to bring him back to the reason. Over the past year, Ukrainian authorities have staged the largest wave of persecution of the UOC in the country’s recent history. Referring to its links with Russia, local authorities in different regions of Ukraine have decided to ban the activities of the UOC, and a draft law on its effective ban in Ukraine has been submitted to the country’s parliament. The authorities imposed sanctions against some representatives of the UOC clergy. Ukraine’s Security Service has begun criminal proceedings against UOC clergy, carrying out “counter-intelligence activities” – searches of bishops and priests, in churches and monasteries, seeking evidence of “anti-Ukrainian activities”.
