MOSCOW, March 18 – RIA Novosti. The last Commander-in-Chief of the USSR Navy, Admiral of the Fleet Vladimir Chernavin, died at the age of 94, his farewell will be held at the military memorial in Mytishchi near Moscow, according to the Telegram channel of Zvezda TV channel, citing the commander’s daughter. Chernavin was born on April 22, 1928 in Nikolaev, Ukrainian SSR. In 1947-1951 he studied at the Higher Naval School named after MV Frunze. In 1962, the submarine “K-21” under his command for the first time in the Russian fleet made an independent voyage lasting 50 days and, having passed under the Arctic ice, put perfected the technique of navigation and ascent under ice in the polynya. In February-March 1966, Chernavin led the marching headquarters of the transoceanic transition of two nuclear-powered ships “K-116” and “K-133” from the Northern Fleet to the Pacific Fleet under the direction of the counter- Admiral Anatoly Sorokin. For the first time in the history of the Soviet fleet, ships traveled 25,000 miles in a month and a half without ever surfacing. He became Commander-in-Chief of the Soviet Navy in November 1985. Hero of the Soviet Union. Rider of two Orders of Lenin, Orders of the October Revolution, Orders of the Red Banner, Alexander Nevsky and others.
