Stoltenberg said Finland will become a NATO member before elections in Turkey on May 14
Finland will become a NATO member ahead of presidential elections in Turkey on May 14. So said NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, reports CASS.
“I have received assurances that the Hungarian parliament will soon ratify the Finnish accession protocol, and that the Turkish parliament will do so before the next elections, so I expect Finland to become a member of NATO before Turkish elections. For Sweden, I cannot name specific dates, but their entry is the first priority,” he said.
Former Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan declaredthat the vote on the ratification of Finland’s NATO membership in the republic’s parliament can take place before the national elections for the head of state, scheduled for 14 May. According to the Turkish leader, Finland has taken “sincere and concrete steps” to address Ankara’s security concerns. Erdogan stressed that Turkey has always supported the open door policy of the North Atlantic Alliance.
