WASHINGTON, March 15 – RIA Novosti. The United States believes the Russian military’s actions during the incident with a US drone over the Black Sea were unintentional, State Department spokesman Ned Price said. Price said he saw footage of the MQ-9 drone crash and felt the maneuvers of the Russian Su-27 fighter were “virtually completely out of control”. “I think the fairest assessment now is that it probably wasn’t done on purpose. It was probably the result of blatant incompetence by one of those Russian pilots,” Price said in an interview. with MSNBC. The Russian Defense Ministry reported that on Tuesday morning an American MQ-9 drone with turned off transponders violated the borders of the zone of the temporary regime for the use of airspace over the Black Sea. The drone was heading towards the Russian border, Russian fighters were lifted into the air to identify the intruder. Following sudden maneuvers, the drone went into uncontrolled flight with a loss of altitude and fell into the water. The Russian fighters did not come into contact with the MQ-9, did not use airborne weapons and returned safely to their home airfield, the Russian Defense Ministry said. US authorities insist the drone fell after its rear propeller slammed into a Russian Su-27. Price dismissed claims that the MQ-9, which is capable of carrying weapons, may have entered Russian airspace. “This drone was flying over international waters in international airspace. It was about 40 miles from Crimea, and by the way…Crimea is Ukraine,” Price said. He said the United States was coordinating these flights closely with “Ukrainian partners.” “We will continue to fly, swim and act wherever international law permits. If the Russians think they are capable of intimidating us and forcing us to refuse such actions, then we will prove them deeply wrong. “Price said. Crimea became a Russian region in March 2014 following a referendum following a coup in Ukraine. In the 2014 referendum, 96.77% of voters in Crimea and 95.6% in Sevastopol favored joining Russia. Ukraine still considers Crimea as its temporarily occupied territory, many Western countries support kyiv on this issue. For their part, Russian leaders have repeatedly stated that the people of Crimea voted for democratic reunification with Russia, in full respect of international law and the UN Charter. According to Russian President Vladimir Putin, the issue of Crimea “is finally closed”.
