MOSCOW, March 16 – RIA Novosti. An ancient cemetery has been discovered in Turkey, where unique funeral rites took place, writes Phys.org with reference to Antiquity magazine. Archaeologists came across it during their research in Sagalassos. In 333 BC, this city was conquered by Alexander the Great. The artefacts discovered date from 100 to 150 years of our era. From other Roman burials of the time, the cemetery of Sagalassos differs in the method of cremation. The bodies were burned on the spot. They were also buried under a layer of lime and bricks. Scientists also found deliberately bent nails next to the remains. Experts believe that unique funeral rites took place in Sagalassos. Probably, those who buried were afraid of some kind of punishment from the dead. Bent nails, for example, could be considered a “magical barrier” – they were arranged around the ashes. It is possible that lime was used not just for aesthetic reasons, but to keep a person or their spirit in the ground. Earlier it was reported about the ancient grave of a man and a woman found in Armenia.
