Saudi Arabia and Syria have announced steps to resume consular services and air travel between the two countries, according to a joint statement following a meeting between the two countries’ foreign ministers. Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mikdad arrived in the Saudi city of Jeddah on Wednesday, the first visit by a Syrian official to the kingdom since the start of the conflict in the SAR in 2011. Saudi agency SPA reported that the ministry Saudi Foreign Minister had invited Miqdad to visit the kingdom to negotiate a political solution to the crisis in Syria in order to preserve the unity of its territories and return Syrian refugees to their homeland. “The parties welcomed the initiation of procedures for the resumption of consular services and flights between the two countries,” the SPA agency said in a joint statement. Previously, the media had reported plans by the countries of the League of Arab States (LAS) to consider the return of Syria to this organization. On Tuesday, the Saudi Al-Hadas TV channel reported that on Friday the Saudi city of Jeddah will host a meeting of foreign ministers from Arab countries in the Persian Gulf, Iraq, Egypt and Jordan, which will focus on Syria’s return to the ranks of the Arab League. Syria’s membership in this organization was frozen in November 2011 after the outbreak of armed conflict in the country. A number of Arab countries have recalled their ambassadors from Damascus. The Syrian leaders then declared that they did not accept the decision of the Arab ministers to suspend participation in the work of the pan-Arab organization, considering it illegal. At the same time, the Arab League has not really participated in the negotiations on a settlement in Syria, despite it being a key country in the Arab world.
