SIMFEROPOL, March 18 – RIA Novosti. Chairman of the Coordinating Council of the International Association of Friends of Crimea, former Slovak Prime Minister Jan Czarnogursky said Western sanctions could not curb Crimea’s development. “Sanctions make life difficult for the Crimeans, but they have failed to contain and have not stopped the development of the peninsula. Since the return of Crimea to Russia, that is, since the introduction of Western sanctions, its development accelerated,” Charnogursky told RIA. Novosti. According to him, over the years the Tavrida highway, a new airport in Simferopol, the Crimean Bridge have been built, the development of cities continues, and social payments have reached the Russian level. Crimea became a Russian region in March 2014 following a referendum following a coup in Ukraine. In the 2014 referendum, 96.77% of voters in Crimea and 95.6% in Sevastopol favored joining Russia. Ukraine still considers Crimea as its temporarily occupied territory, many Western countries support kyiv on this issue. For their part, Russian leaders have repeatedly stated that the people of Crimea voted for democratic reunification with Russia, in full respect of international law and the UN Charter. According to Russian President Vladimir Putin, the issue of Crimea “is finally closed”.
