Every day since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Meduza editors have selected key snapshots taken the day before the war. These images contain scenes of cruelty, violence and death, but most of them are not placed under a special plate, with which editors usually hide these images. In this series of documents, we try to document the war as it is.

Battles for Bakhmut
Until the start of the Ukrainian counter-offensive, the PMC Wagner continued to advance in Bakhmut. Evacuation of Avdiivka
Avdiivka is a frontline town located south of Bakhmut and about 20 kilometers from Donetsk. Last March, local authorities announcement on the start of the evacuation. Avdiivka has been constantly shelled since the start of a full-scale war there, according to words the head of the city’s military-civilian administration Vitaliy Barabash, there were no buildings left.
Although Avdiivka is regularly the target of airstrikes, the town stay about 1.8 thousand (before the large-scale invasion of Russia, about 32.5 thousand lived there). Oleksandra Gavrilko, chairman of the Donetsk region police informed TCH.ua about rescuing a family with two children and a grandmother, who had previously been in hiding from evacuation for six months.
“There was a case when a five-month-old child died as a result of shelling and fire in Avdiivka. The day before, we tried to persuade the mother of this child to evacuate, but she refused. As a result, the child and grandmother died, but mom and dad survived. Shortly before that, a woman told us that she refused to leave the house because she was building it and you wouldn’t do anything to me. She added that this was her adamant position. A day later her baby died,” Gavrilko also said.
In Avdiivka, among other places, the forced evacuation of children and their relatives is underway. Some parents like Remarks police of the Donetsk region, hide the children and deliberately change the address of residence.
Curfew in Lviv
Curfew in the Lviv region, as well as throughout Ukraine, held every night. In Lviv, it lasts from midnight to five in the morning. Currently, you cannot be on the street and move by any means of transport without a special permit.
Next weekend, when Orthodox and Greek Catholics in Ukraine celebrate Easter – already the second in a full-scale war – a curfew will not be canceled.
