MOSCOW, March 18 – RIA Novosti. The crucifix, which is being performed in churches of the Russian Orthodox Church this Saturday, reminds believers of the purposes of Great Lent, the suffering of Jesus Christ and the sacrifice believers make, Priest Alexander Volkov, chairman of the commission information from the Moscow Diocese, told RIA Novosti. During the Saturday evening service of the third week of Great Lent, a crucifix is solemnly performed from the altar. The Cross of the Lord is placed in the center of the temple for worship, it will be there for a week (week of worship of the cross), remembering the suffering and death of the Savior, inspiring and strengthening the faithful to continue the fast. Father Alexander drew attention to the fact that believers are observing a stricter fast this week, “because memories of the sufferings of Christ are always associated with fasting and great ascetic, spiritual and bodily effort.” According to him, the cross is also removed in order to “rethink once again the goals a person sets for himself during fasting, because fasting is long and a person may lose spiritual resolve.” “The cross is removed both to remind us of the upcoming holy week and to strengthen our spiritual efforts, which Christians can weaken in three weeks. Fasting is not just a system of dietary restrictions, we do it in order to make a sacrifice for Christ and try to face our sins and our passions. Therefore, memories of Christ’s sufferings strengthen believers,” Volkov said. He added that the cross is the middle week of Great Lent, after which “more intensive preparations for Easter begin.” “The approach of Holy Week and Easter will appear more and more clearly in the liturgical texts. The events of the second part of Lent – the position of Mary of Egypt, in the fifth week we hear of the suffering imminent arrival of Christ, of which he speaks prophetically to his disciples. All this prepares believers little by little for Easter”, concluded the priest. Lent in 2023 runs from February 27 to April 15 – if you count with Holy Week (week). During this period, except for a few days, the Church prescribes the rejection of meat, dairy products, alcohol, fish and a number of other products. In the Church, special prayers of repentance are read, the liturgy is celebrated less often, and the vestments of the clergy change. It is a time of repentance, of correction, of spiritual preparation for the feast of the Resurrection of Christ, which this year will be celebrated on April 16.
