WASHINGTON, March 15 – RIA Novosti. Pentagon Chief Lloyd Austin, after a conversation with Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, said the major powers should lead by example when it comes to transparency and communication. At a press conference, he clarified that the subject of the conversation, the first since late October last year, was the incident with a US drone over the Black Sea. “I just finished a phone conversation with my Russian counterpart, Minister Shoigu. As I’ve said many times, it’s important that the big powers serve as a model of transparency and communication,” Austin said. He reiterated that the United States will fly where international law permits, and urged Russian military aviation to operate “safely and professionally.” The Russian Defense Ministry previously reported that on Tuesday morning an American MQ-9 drone with transponders turned off violated the borders of the zone of the temporary regime for the use of airspace over the Black Sea. The drone was heading towards the Russian border, Russian fighters were lifted into the air to identify the intruder. Following sudden maneuvers, the drone went into uncontrolled flight with a loss of altitude and fell into the water. The Russian fighters did not come into contact with the MQ-9, did not use airborne weapons and returned safely to their base airfield, the Russian Defense Ministry stressed.
