MOSCOW, March 21 – RIA Novosti. The Pentagon will speed up delivery of tanks to Ukraine by sending refurbished old models, reports the Associated Press, citing US officials who wished to remain anonymous. In January, the United States announced a military aid package for Ukraine, which for the first time included 31 Abrams tanks worth $400 million. However, the Pentagon said it could take the US military more than a year to deliver M1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine. “Officers said a decision has been made to ship older versions of the M1A1,” the Associated Press said in a statement. Now the United States plans to deliver the tanks to the war zone within 8-10 months. As the agency notes, it is unclear when Washington will begin training the Ukrainian army in the use of tanks. Russia has already sent a note to NATO countries because of the supply of arms to Ukraine. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov noted that any shipment containing weapons destined for Ukraine would become a legitimate target for Russia. The Russian Federation’s Foreign Ministry said NATO countries were “playing with fire” by supplying arms to Ukraine. The press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov noted that pumping Ukraine with weapons from the West does not contribute to the success of the Russian-Ukrainian negotiations and will have a negative effect. Lavrov said that the United States and NATO are directly involved in the conflict in Ukraine, “including not only the supply of weapons, but also the training of personnel…in the territory of Great Britain, Germany, Italy and other countries”.
