MOSCOW, April 1 – RIA Novosti. The Venezuelan opposition has lost access to the country’s government accounts, frozen due to sanctions in the United States, reports Bloomberg. Venezuelan opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez said in an interview with the agency that the US Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control had not issued a proper license to access those funds. The frozen assets of $347 million were previously under the control of opposition leader Juan Guaido, whom the United States has recognized as Venezuela’s legitimate president. Yet in late 2022, Venezuela’s opposition voted to liquidate the “interim government” of Guaido, who illegally proclaimed himself head of state in 2019. Opposition leaders have said the resignation of the interim government is a late, because the structure has weakened and does not fulfill its tasks. After some time, Guaido left the post of president of the opposition National Assembly, which exists alongside the National Constitutional Assembly of Venezuela. In Venezuela in early 2019, mass protests began against President Nicolas Maduro shortly after he was sworn in. Guaido, leader of the opposition-controlled National Assembly, illegally proclaimed himself interim head of state. A number of Western countries, led by the United States, have announced recognition of Guaido. In turn, Maduro called the parliament leader a puppet of the United States. Russia, China, Turkey and a number of other countries have backed Maduro as the rightful president.
