PARIS, March 16 – RIA Novosti. French President Emmanuel Macron has threatened to dissolve the country’s National Assembly (lower house of parliament) if the vote on the pension reform bill fails, BFMTV reports, citing a government source. The National Assembly will hold a final vote on Thursday on the pension reform bill that has sparked nationwide protests, which will determine whether the retirement age will be raised to 64, with which the majority of French people disagree. “As BFMTV learned from a government source, Emmanuel Macron, who spoke on Wednesday evening at the Elysée Palace with (the Prime Minister – editor’s note) Elizabeth Bourne and the ministers linked to the pension reform, declared during this meeting that the assembly was threatened with dissolution in the event of failure of the vote in the meeting room”, indicated the chain in a press release. As indicated by the chain at the Elysée Palace, the consultations are continuing with the aim to mobilize around a vote for reform. As noted by the French media, the current week will be decisive for the government. The French Prime Minister has declared that she does not want to resort to Article 49.3 of the Constitution, which allows the authorities to pass a bill without the approval of Parliament, after having already resorted to this measure 10 times to pass the 2023 finance bills last fall. It is noted that this approach will be perceived as a weakness of the authorities, which failed to convince MPs of the need for reform and garner the majority of votes needed to back the bill.
