MOSCOW, April 9 – RIA Novosti. Britain’s King Charles III has come into conflict with the Church of England over his desire to break the ancient tradition of the coronation ceremony for British monarchs, the Mail on Sunday newspaper reports, citing sources. The king insists on the presence of representatives of different religions during the coronation ceremony of British monarchs. He declared his desire to be the “protector” not only of a particular religion, but of all others, already 30 years ago, involving a change in the meaning of the title “Defender of the Faith”, which was worn by all British monarchs since Henry VIII. The monarch has been told that his desire for a varied ceremony, including non-Christian participation, risked clashing with centuries of canon law that prohibited Muslim, Hindu, Jewish and other religious leaders from saying prayers during the service . The newspaper notes that due to this dispute, the publication of the coronation settlement has been postponed, until which there are only four weeks left. Buckingham Palace denies this. As the newspaper points out, the coronation promises to be more “diverse” in terms of the presence of representatives of other cultures and religions at the ceremony compared to the coronation of Elizabeth II in 1953. At the same time, representatives making Anglican authorities resist this idea, claiming that this tradition is primarily Anglican. A compromise option, according to the publication, could be a separate coronation ceremony with the participation of representatives of different religions. Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II, who ruled the country for more than 70 years, died on September 8 in Scotland aged 96. Prince Charles became king, taking the name Charles III, his wife Camilla was given the status of queen consort. The royal couple’s coronation is scheduled for May 6.
