MOSCOW, March 18 – RIA Novosti. Achieving the goals of the special operation guarantees the preservation of Russia’s sovereignty, its security, and the Russian Federation has everything necessary for this, said Valentina Matviyenko, Chairwoman of the Federation Council. She pointed out that it is Russia and its policies that are the main obstacle to the aspirations of the United States and its satellites to establish world hegemony. “We should have no illusions not only about the Kiev regime, but also about the current authorities in most Western countries,” the politician is sure. According to Matvienko, nine years ago the reunification of Crimea and Sevastopol with Russia became an event of historical significance also because the Russians and the international community saw for themselves that the collapse of the Soviet Union was not becoming the collapse of historical Russia. “She’s alive. And ‘Crimean Spring’ announced it to the world,” the lawmaker noted. In his opinion, nine years ago Crimea not only returned to Russia, but also to Russia. “I returned, first of all, to myself. It seems paradoxical, but it is a fact. The Russians saw their country, their history in a different way, they fully realized that they and they alone were the creators,” Matvienko pointed out. The senator noted that it was the reunification of Crimea and Sevastopol with Russia that gave additional impetus to the long and difficult struggle of Donbass and other regions for the right to speak and think in Russian. “It became a prologue to the return of the people’s republics of Donetsk and Lugansk, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions. They also returned to their homes. These republics and regions are an integral part of historical Russia. They will remain so forever. Like Crimea and Sevastopol,” concluded the Chairman of the Federation Council. Crimea became a Russian region in March 2014 following a referendum following a coup in Ukraine. In the 2014 referendum, 96.77% of voters in Crimea and 95.6% in Sevastopol favored joining Russia. Ukraine still considers Crimea as its temporarily occupied territory, many Western countries support kyiv on this issue. For their part, Russian leaders have repeatedly stated that the people of Crimea voted for democratic reunification with Russia, in full respect of international law and the UN Charter. According to Russian President Vladimir Putin, the issue of Crimea “is finally closed”.
