MOSCOW, March 21 – RIA Novosti. Latvia’s ruling party, the National Association, has proposed banning Russian subtitles for movies, reports Sputnik. “The practice of Russian subtitles not only does not stimulate the study of the Latvian language, but also creates the illusion that Latvia is part of the so-called “Russian world”, where public information should also be provided in creation of a single society”, the annotation to the bill. Previously, Russian dubbing was prohibited in Latvia. About 1.8 million people live in Latvia, of whom about 40% are Russian speakers. In Latvia, a official language is Latvian, Russian has the status of a foreign language.
