MOSCOW, April 8 – RIA Novosti. Ukrainian Foreign Ministry press secretary Oleg Nikolenko criticized the participation of Ukrainian and Russian teenagers in the Stations of the Cross ceremony near the walls of the ancient Roman Colosseum on Good Friday. The Stations of the Cross ceremony was attended by two teenagers from Russia and Ukraine, who carried the holy crucifix on the 10th leg of the journey, symbolizing Jesus’ ascent to Golgotha. “We are disappointed that the Holy See did not take into account the arguments of the Ukrainian side on the offensive nature of such a gesture,” Nikolenko wrote on his Facebook page*. Nikolenko argues that such a decision “undermines the principles of justice and universal morality, discredits the concept of peace and brotherhood” and does not contribute to reconciliation. According to him, this is an attempt to put an equal sign between Ukraine and Russia. The unifying theme of the 14 stands, during which passages from the Gospel and prayerful reflections are read, was “Voices of peace in a world of war”. The participants in the procession around the ancient Roman amphitheater, where the first Christians were martyred, were representatives of peoples and territories plagued by military conflicts, violence, famine and the migration crisis. As previously reported, Pope Francis did not take part in the traditional ceremony due to the cold weather and watched it from his apartment in Saint Martha’s house in the Vatican. Last Saturday, the pontiff was discharged from the Gemelli clinic in Rome after a three-day hospitalization due to bronchitis. In his absence, Via Crucis was led by the vicar of Rome, Angelo De Donatis.* Meta’s activities (social networks Facebook, Instagram) are banned in Russia as extremist.
