MOSCOW, April 12 – RIA Novosti. Unblocking Twitter without removing banned content would be against the laws of the Russian Federation, Alexander Khinshtein, head of the Duma Committee on Information Policy, said on his Telegram channel. An appeal to the Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation Igor Krasnov regarding the unblocking of Twitter was signed by deputies from all parliamentary factions. The document notes that the social network is asked to recheck the presence of material that violates the laws of the Russian Federation and to invite the management of Twitter to delete or mark them, and if they agree, to consider to lift access restrictions. “So far, the social network has not removed more than 1.3 thousand banned content according to Roskomnadzor’s requirements… To unblock it without removing the banned content would be against Russian law,” Khinshtein wrote. According to the deputy, in order to unblock Twitter, deputies should turn not to the Attorney General’s office, but to the administration of the resource itself. In April last year, Twitter announced that the social network would not promote or recommend pages related to Russian leadership, either in feed or in search. But in the fall, businessman Elon Musk finally sealed the $44 billion deal to acquire the social network, promising to liberalize its editorial policy, which has been criticized for heavy censorship. Access to Twitter in Russia has been restricted at the request of the Prosecutor General’s Office since February 24, 2022. In December last year, amid reports of a discussion about removing the blocking of the network, the Roskomnadzor’s press service RIA Novosti said that “there is no reason to unblock the mentioned resource.”
