MOSCOW, March 19 – RIA Novosti. The director of the Institute for the Future of Ukraine, Vadim Denisenko, said that the transition of priests from the Canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) to the Ukrainian Orthodox Schismatic Church (OCU) will be a process irreversible. Previously, Ukrainian Culture Minister Oleksandr Tkachenko said monks from the canonical UOC could stay in the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra if transferred to the schismatic OCU. “The process of transition from the UOC to the OCU will become much faster if the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra is cleared. The process has already started. If a relatively small, but significant mass of the UOC passes from the side of the ‘OCU, then the process will be irreversible and will take place throughout Ukraine. Already now, all priests are on a low start,” Denisenko said on the Rada TV channel. Denisenko also expressed confidence that after March 29 the monks would still leave the Lavra territory. “I hope they have the good sense to quietly and calmly pack their bags and leave Lavra territory,” he said. On March 10, the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra National Reserve ordered the monks of the canonical UOC to vacate its buildings until March 29. The Ukrainian interdepartmental working group for the preparation of proposals and recommendations on the organization of the implementation of certain tasks related to the activities of religious organizations has established a violation by the monastery of the terms of the agreement on the use of state property. The commission did not provide the content and details of the violations, the Ministry of Culture did not publish them. In this context, on Monday, the Metropolitan of the Vinnitsa Diocese of the Canonical UOC Varsonofy announced that a commission with an inspection arrived on the territory of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra without a warning or documents. Earlier, the Kremlin said that the Kiev regime’s illegal actions encroaching on the church once again demonstrate what Russia is fighting and what it needs to stop. The Commissioner for Human Rights of the Russian Federation, Tatyana Moskalkova, appealed to the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights to ask him to help prevent the lawlessness of the Ukrainian authorities in the Lavra of Kiev-Pechersk. Russia’s deputy representative to the OSCE, Maksim Buyakevich, called the OSCE’s lack of response to the violation of rights and discrimination of Orthodox Christians in Ukraine scandalous. And on the website of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, a petition appeared with a call not to expel the monks of the Canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) from the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra. The pressure on the Ukrainian Canonical Orthodox Church (UOC), the largest in the country, with which millions of believers identify, began in the 1990s by nationalists and schismatics. In 2018, this turned into a full-scale state campaign, the authorities created the “Orthodox Church of Ukraine” (OCU) – a competitor of the UOC – out of schismatic organizations. At the same time, an information campaign against the UOC was launched, mass seizures of its churches by looters, their “voluntary re-registration” with the OCU with the approval of the authorities, attacks by nationalists and schismatics against clergy and believers with impunity. In 2022, Ukrainian authorities staged the largest wave of persecution of the UOC in the country’s recent history. Referring to its links with Russia, local authorities in different regions of Ukraine have decided to ban the activities of the UOC, and a draft law on its effective ban in Ukraine has been submitted to the country’s parliament. State sanctions have been imposed on some representatives of the UOC clergy. Ukraine’s Security Service has begun criminal proceedings against UOC clergy, carrying out “counter-intelligence activities” – searches of bishops and priests, in churches and monasteries, seeking evidence of “anti-Ukrainian activities”.
