PARIS, March 17 – RIA Novosti. Place de la Concorde in Paris, a spontaneous rally is taking place against the pension reform adopted the day before without a vote in Parliament, reports a correspondent for RIA Novosti. Several thousand people gathered in the square near the National Assembly building in central Paris. They chant “Macron resign!”, “Paris, get up!”, “Young people in the street, Macron, it’s war!” There are many young people among the participants, as well as black bloc radicals. The police blocked access to the square in advance from all the adjacent streets, as well as from the Pont de la Concorde, the Champs Elysées and the Jardin des Tuileries. Law enforcement is on duty. Access to the Palais Bourbon, where the National Assembly sits, is blocked by water cannons. Protesters began building barricades of repair barriers. On the eve of the Place de la Concorde, a rally was also held against the pension reform adopted by the government. As the correspondent of RIA Novosti reported, in the capital, people began to gather in the afternoon in front of the National Assembly building. After Prime Minister Elisabeth Bourne announced the passage of the law using Article 49.3 of the constitution, without the approval of MPs, thousands of people began to gather in Place de la Concorde. Towards evening, protesters clashed with police at the rally, tear gas was used. Later, the police used water cannons to disperse the protest. Late in the evening, protesters were still erecting barricades and setting fires, and several cars were set on fire. More than 300 people were arrested. On Thursday, rallies took place in almost all major French cities. The CFDT union has announced that a new general demonstration against the law on raising the retirement age will take place on March 23. The reform, adopted on Thursday, consists of raising the retirement age in the country and abolishing “special” schemes for a number of difficult professions. The authorities will start raising the retirement age by three months a year from September 1, 2023. Thus, in 2030, it will reach 64 instead of the current 62.
