Greek police broke up a peaceful protest in central Athens, using tear gas and stun grenades, the Avgi newspaper, the organ of the largest opposition party SYRIZA, reported. Some media are reporting that the riots took place after protesters started throwing Molotov cocktails. On Thursday, protest rallies took place in Athens in connection with a train crash in which 57 people died. From the start of the rally, far fewer people gathered than during the demonstrations of the previous days, but then new columns of demonstrators began to approach. Clashes began at the end of the procession. Avga’s video shows how police rush a passing convoy, disperse it, grab a young man, but immediately let him go. “Once again, police dispersed a peaceful protest over the Tempe tragedy and the government’s cover-up efforts. The avgi.gr video documented an unprovoked attack by police special forces on protesters who were demonstrating peacefully because of the government’s attempt to cover responsibility for the tragedy. It seems that the security forces attacked with the sole aim of disrupting the march,” the newspaper writes. In the video, the voices of the protesters are hear asking the police why they hit people, while people of all ages run to escape the police.
