MEXICO CITY, March 16 – RIA Novosti. The second batch of 2,000 prisoners have been transferred from other prisons in El Salvador to the Cecot terror detention center, designed for 40,000 people, President Nayib Bukele said. The largest in America, according to the Minister of Public Works Romeo Herrera, a prison with an area of 231,000 m2, designed to accommodate 40,000 inmates, was inaugurated on February 1 after seven months of work. Work on the penitentiary began in mid-2022 under a state of emergency authorities imposed in March to crack down on gangs. As the President of El Salvador noted, with the introduction of the state of emergency, crime in the country decreased markedly, in particular, the number of murders fell to almost zero. Bukele calls local gangsters, mostly representing Central America’s largest criminal organization Mara Salvatrucha, terrorists and promises 30-year prison sentences simply for belonging to an organized crime group. The commissioning of the new prison will help normalize the situation in El Salvador’s overcrowded prisons – according to official figures, more than 60,000 people have been arrested during the state of emergency, the vast majority of whom are awaiting their cases behind bars.
