MOSCOW, April 8 – RIA Novosti. During the seizure of the temple of the Canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) in the Kyiv region, one of the assailants died, the Union of Orthodox Journalists reported. “During the seizure of the temple in the village of Lipovets, the former Kagarlyk district of Kyiv region, the deputy head of the mayor of Kagarlyk, Ivan Semtsov, died,” the union said on its website. According to eyewitnesses, Semtsov, together with the head of the village of Lipovets, Vasily Tyslenko, organized a seizure of the temple by a thief. During the conflict, Semtsov snatched the cross from the priest, threw it to the ground, after which the attacker fell ill and soon died. Over the past year, Ukrainian authorities have staged the largest wave of persecution of the UOC in the country’s recent history. Referring to its links with Russia, local authorities in different regions of Ukraine have decided to ban the activities of the UOC, and a draft law on its effective ban in Ukraine has been submitted to the country’s parliament. The authorities have imposed sanctions against some representatives of the UOC clergy. Ukraine’s Security Service has begun criminal proceedings against UOC clergy, carrying out “counter-intelligence activities” – searches of bishops and priests, in churches and monasteries, seeking evidence of “anti-Ukrainian activities”.
