CHISINAU, March 16 – RIA Novosti. Former Moldovan President Igor Dodon believes that the current head of state, Maia Sandu, has succeeded in dividing the opposition, but despite this, everyone should support the demonstrations taking place in the country in order to express his disagreement with the authorities. Earlier, the opposition Shor party said it was resuming anti-government protests. Organizers appealed to socialist and communist parties, as well as the “national alternative movement” of Chisinau Mayor Ion Ceban, with a call to support the protests. “The most successful “special operation” carried out by Maia Sandu so far is the operation to divide the opposition. Now everyone is on different barricades to express their disagreement with the anarchy committed by Maia Sandu,” Dodon wrote on his Telegram channel. He noted that the protests currently taking place in Moldova are no different from similar protests in France, Spain, Germany and other countries, as citizens are presenting socio-economic demands. Moldova is experiencing an energy crisis due to rising energy prices, gas tariffs have increased almost seven times in 2022 and almost four times for electricity. In a context of rising prices for energy resources, debts for public services are increasing among the population. According to experts, in Chisinau the gas debts of ordinary consumers have increased sevenfold since last November. Many polls show that around 60% of the country’s population doubts the ability of the ruling Action and Solidarity party to stay in power for another three years before the next legislative elections. Also, about 70% of Moldovans are disappointed with the authorities’ policy and nearly 65% support the idea of changing the government.
