MOSCOW, April 8 – RIA Novosti. Two babies were born in the United States with brain damage from COVID-19, which their mothers contracted during pregnancy, and one child died at the age of one year and one month, according to a study by the University of Miami Health System and University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. According to the study, coronavirus infection entered children’s bodies during mothers’ pregnancy through the placenta, which “caused brain damage in newborns.” Of note, both babies tested negative for COVID-19, but the amount of antibodies in their blood was very high. According to the scientists, either the antibodies entered the children’s bodies through the mother’s placenta, or the virus itself entered, causing an immune response in them. The scientists added that the newborns had seizures, microcephaly and developmental delay. According to the scientific journal Pediatrics, the deceased baby was born prematurely at 32 weeks gestation. The researchers added that the mothers of the two children contracted the coronavirus during their second trimester of pregnancy and later recovered. However, one of them fell ill for the second time during the third trimester. According to Miller School professor Ali Saad, the placentas of both mothers were removed for analysis, which revealed pathological changes caused by COVID-19. In addition, the scientist examined the brain of the deceased baby after the autopsy. In particular, a lack of white matter and the presence of hypoxia/ischemia in the cerebral cortex were found in the child’s brain.
