MOSCOW, April 11 – RIA Novosti. Australia has suspended its complaint against China to the World Trade Organization (WTO) as it seeks to reopen the Chinese market for Australian barley after three years, Australian television ABC reported. According to the media, this is a new step aimed at restoring relations between Canberra and Beijing. China effectively closed its doors to Australian barley in May 2020, imposing an 80% tariff on it. It came after the previous Australian government called for an independent investigation into the causes of COVID-19, blaming Beijing for the spread of the virus. At that time, Australian authorities decided to challenge the tariff by filing a complaint with the WTO. Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong said on Tuesday that Canberra had reached an agreement with China that “paves the way for the resolution of Australia’s barley dispute”. China has agreed to review its grain tariffs within three to four months, she said, and Australia will temporarily suspend the dispute at the WTO during that time. “Obviously, if the fee is not removed at the end of the review period, we will reopen our WTO dispute,” Wong said. Grain Producers Australia, representing barley exporters, reportedly welcomed the new deal. “We welcome the government’s constructive dialogue and positive progress in stabilizing relations with China, as well as the opportunity to resume the barley trade,” said the organization’s president, Barry Large. In February 2023, trade ministers from Australia and China held their first bilateral meeting since 2019, showing signs of improving relations. China recently lifted trade restrictions on Australian coal, first introduced in late 2020.
