Assad recognizes Russia’s new borders with annexed territories
MOSCOW, March 16 – RIA Novosti. Damascus recognizes Russia’s new borders with territories that joined following referendum results: DPR, LPR, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said in an interview at RIA Novosti.
RIA Novosti was the first global news outlet to speak to Assad immediately after his Kremlin talks.
“Of course. I say these are Russian territories, and even if the war had not taken place, these are historically Russian territories,” the Syrian leader said, responding to the question of whether Damascus would recognize the new borders of the Russian Federation.
Assad recalled that Syria had recognized these regions even before they joined Russia.
“This issue is clear to us from the start, and we will not hesitate in our position. Syria’s position is clear and at the same time resolute, we have conviction on this issue, not only for the sake of friendship with Russia, but also because these territories are the territories of Russia,” the Syrian president said.
According to him, this position is based on historical facts.
