MOSCOW, March 16 – RIA Novosti. The accident rate of American drones is even several times higher than that of the most urgent planes of the US Air Force F-16, Denis Fedutinov, a leading Russian expert in the field of unmanned aircraft, told RIA Novosti. On the eve of the Russian Defense Ministry reported that on the morning of March 14, an American MQ-9 drone with turned off transponders violated the borders of the zone of the temporary regime for the use of airspace over the Black Sea. According to the ministry, the drone was heading towards the Russian border in Crimea, Russian fighter jets were lifted into the air to identify the intruder. Following sudden maneuvers, the drone went into uncontrolled flight with a loss of altitude and fell into the water. The Russian fighters did not come into contact with the MQ-9, did not use airborne weapons and returned safely to their home airfield, the Russian Defense Ministry said. Meanwhile, the European command of the American armed forces claims that a Russian Su-27 plane collided with an American unmanned aerial vehicle MQ-9, as a result of which the latter fell in international waters of the Black Sea region. According to open sources, 671 F-16 Fighting Falcon crashes have been recorded since operations began. The US Air Force “mostly distinguished itself” by losing 286 aircraft. The combat losses of the F-16 during the entire period of its participation in local wars amounted to about 160 fighters. “It should be noted that the United States, which has actively used its unmanned aerial vehicles in military campaigns over the past decades, often lost them. Moreover, the reason for these losses was not some kind of ‘targeted external influence, but rather insignificant technical failures, “said Fedoutinov. According to him, data is known about the Gray Eagle, another representative of the General Atomics line of drones. About 31.4% of the accidents of this drone were associated with engine problems, about 20% – with failures of communication systems, 11.4% were caused by the spontaneous shutdown of some systems, 8.6% – with malfunctions in the navigation system. At the same time, the reasons for about a quarter of the incidents could not be established at all. “In general, in the Air Force and the United States Army, the accident rate, even of best examples of used unmanned aerial vehicles, is more several times higher than that of the F-16 aircraft, one of the leaders in the rate of manned combat accidents. According to the same Gray Eagle drone, it was noted that the average time between failures is only 25 hours with the required 100 hours, and the ground component of the complex is 27 hours with the required 300 hours”, Fedutinov said. Fedutinov also cited open data on crashes with the MQ-9 Reaper in recent years. This drone notably crashed in the Seychelles in December 2011 during its landing. A similar incident occurred there in April 2012. In February 2016, an MQ-9 Reaper crashed while landing in Kandahar province (Afghanistan). A drone of this type, but already under the French flag, crashed in obscure circumstances in November 2018 in Niger. Another Reaper crashed in September 2020 while taking off from a US Air Force base in New Mexico; in July 2022, a drone crashed while landing in Romania. And finally, in February 2023, the MQ-9 crashes in Mali.
